Driving Climate Action with Integrity and Impact
The world needs effective climate solutions that businesses can genuinely trust and that actively benefit communities on the front lines. Triochar was born from the conviction that robust climate action and sustainable development must go hand-in-hand. We saw businesses striving to meet consumer demand for ‘climate friendly’ products but lacking the verifiable proof to do so credibly, alongside the vast, untapped potential of smallholder farmers worldwide to contribute meaningfully to carbon removal
Our mission is clear: To produce high-integrity biochar that delivers verifiable and lasting carbon removal, while creating measurable benefits for farming communities and regenerating vital soils. By prioritizing projects with proven climate, community, and ecosystem impact, we connect global climate goals with tangible on-the-ground action — ensuring transparency, fairness, and simplicity in every step of the process.
The Path to Triochar
Our story began around 2018, driven by a search for meaningful ways to contribute positively to our planet’s health. Exploring different climate solutions, we were introduced to the fascinating world of biochar – a stable, carbon-rich material made from biomass waste that could lock away CO2 for centuries. This immediately struck a chord, reminding us of ancient agricultural wisdom: we recalled stories of our own grandparents using simple wood ash, a similar carbon substance, to naturally enrich their soil and improve harvests. It felt like uncovering a powerful link between past practices and future solutions.
Initially, our curiosity led us to visit several large-scale, industrial pyrolysis plants. While technologically advanced, we simultaneously discovered the artisanal method – using simpler, locally adaptable kilns like the Kon-Tiki design developed by the Ithaka Institute. We were captivated. The realization that such an accessible, low-tech approach could be easier to scale globally across diverse communities, while offering incredible co-benefits like improved soil and farmer income, was a turning point.
This blend of simplicity, scalability, and multi-faceted benefits felt profoundly impactful. Research reinforced our view that Biochar Carbon Removal (BCR), particularly through decentralized networks, stands out as one of the most scalable methods for durably removing atmospheric CO2 currently available. This powerful combination – ancient knowledge validated by modern science, scalable through community partnership, and verified with digital transparency – became the inspiration and foundation for Triochar. We launched with a clear mission: to harness this potential and make credible, impactful climate action a reality.
